Flag

In autumn 2025, we commissioned local artist Tom Armstrong to create a flag to represent and celebrate the local area, following a long tradition of flags being used to express joy and pride in a place.

To gain an understanding of what people would like to see included on a flag representing their area, Tom led workshops in different community settings. Local people, ranging from toddlers to older adults took part in workshops, designing and creating their own flags. Tom encouraged participants to consider our culture, heritage, landscape and community, which led to an amazing array of flags featuring everything from local landmarks and the river, to plants, trees, animals and witches.

Tom’s final design for the flag takes inspiration from lots of these flags, with the swan and the river (which featured on so many of the flags in the workshops) taking centre stage.
